Pet BereavEment Counselling IN VANCOUVER: A CLOSER LOOK

What Pet Bereavement Counselling Can Help With:

Losing a pet is a real loss, and the grief that follows can be just as painful as any other. It might show up as guilt over a euthanasia decision, an empty routine, or a house that's suddenly too quiet. What makes pet loss especially hard is how little room the world tends to make for it. There's usually no time off work, no ceremony, and often a well-meaning comment that it was "just a dog" or that you can always get another. Pet bereavement counselling offers a space where that loss is taken seriously, without you having to explain or justify how much it hurts.

Grief after a pet dies can be complex, and it doesn't need to look a certain way to be worth support.

In my practice, I offer Vancouver counselling services to support people navigating:

  • The death of a pet, whether sudden or after a long illness
  • Guilt or second-guessing after a euthanasia decision, including questions about timing
  • Anticipatory grief while caring for an aging or terminally ill animal
  • The exhaustion and moral weight of long-term caregiving for a sick pet
  • A pet who went missing, was rehomed, or had to be left behind after a move or separation
  • Disenfranchised grief, when the people around you don't recognize the loss as significant
  • The loss of a service animal, emotional support animal, or a pet who anchored your daily routine
  • Grief that reopens older losses, or that arrives alongside anxiety, depression, or a major life transition
  • Uncertainty about whether, or when, to bring another animal into your life
  • Supporting a child or partner through the loss while managing your own grief

If your experience doesn't fit neatly into these categories, that doesn't make it any less of a loss. You are welcome to reach out, and we can discuss it directly.

Pet Bereavement Counselling Frequently Asked Questions:

Is it normal to grieve a pet this intensely?

Yes. For many people, a pet is a daily companion, a source of routine, and a relationship without conflict or conditions. The intensity of the grief reflects the closeness of the bond, not an overreaction on your part.

I made the decision to euthanize. How do I live with that?

Guilt is one of the most common reasons people come in for pet loss counselling. Being the one who decides is a heavy responsibility, and second-guessing the timing is almost universal. We can work through that guilt without rushing past it or explaining it away.

People around me don't understand why I'm still upset. Is something wrong with me?

No. This is often called disenfranchised grief, meaning grief that others don't fully recognize or validate. It can be isolating, and it often makes the loss harder to move through. Counselling gives you a place where the relationship is taken at full weight.

My pet is still alive but declining. Can I come in now?

Yes. Anticipatory grief and caregiver exhaustion are real, and support before the loss can make a genuine difference. Many people find it helpful to think through end-of-life decisions with someone outside the situation.

How is this different from general grief counselling?

Pet bereavement counselling isn't a separate technique. It's grief counselling with a focus on the particular shape of this loss, including the guilt, the lack of social recognition, and the way a pet's absence changes the structure of an ordinary day.

Do you offer online pet bereavement counselling?

Yes. I provide secure online sessions to clients anywhere in British Columbia, in addition to in-person sessions at my Vancouver office.

Is this type of counselling covered by insurance?

Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) services are generally covered under most extended health plans in BC. See my Rates & Coverage page for details, or check your specific plan for counselling or psychotherapy coverage.
