Trauma Counselling in Vancouver - A Closer Look

What Trauma Counselling Can Help With:

Trauma isn't only about a single dramatic event; it can also arise from years of smaller experiences that accumulate over time, such as chronic stress, unsafe relationships, neglect, or environments where you had to remain alert just to get through the day. Regardless of its origin, trauma often resides in the body as much as in the mind, manifesting as tension, avoidance, a racing nervous system, or a pervasive sense of being 'on guard' long after the immediate danger has passed.

Trauma presents uniquely for each individual and may not always come with a clear label. In my practice, I provide counselling services to support individuals navigating through:

- A single distressing event — such as an accident, assault, medical crisis, or sudden loss.

- Childhood experiences, including neglect, instability, or unsafe caregiving.

- Relational or interpersonal trauma, like abuse or controlling relationships.

- Ongoing or chronic stress that has gradually eroded your sense of safety.

- Trauma connected to identity issues, discrimination, or systemic harm.

- Undiagnosed symptoms such as hypervigilance, dissociation, shutdown, or a body that feels unsettled, even if the root cause is unclear.

You don't need a clearly defined story or a clinical diagnosis to begin seeking emotional support for trauma. Many clients come in simply aware that something feels unresolved.

Trauma Counselling Vancouver - Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to talk about the traumatic event in detail?

No. You're never required to recount details you're not ready to share. Trauma counselling can be effective through building coping skills, understanding your nervous system, and working with how trauma shows up now. These counselling services focus on providing emotional support for trauma at a comfortable pace.

What if I don't remember much, or I'm not sure if what I went through 'counts' as trauma?

It counts if it affected you. Trauma isn't defined by how dramatic an event looks from the outside; it's defined by the impact it had on your nervous system and sense of safety. We can explore this together in trauma counselling without you needing to justify or prove anything.

How long does trauma counselling take?

This varies significantly from person to person, depending on the nature of the trauma, your support system, and your goals. Some people benefit from a few months of focused work; others engage in longer-term therapy. We'll regularly check in on pace and progress together during our emotional support for trauma sessions.

Will I feel worse before I feel better?

Difficult emotions can surface as we work through trauma, which is part of why pacing and safety come first in trauma counselling. My approach prioritizes keeping you grounded and resourced throughout the process, rather than pushing into distressing material too quickly.

Do you offer online trauma counselling?

Yes. I offer secure online sessions to clients anywhere in British Columbia, as well as in-person sessions at my East Vancouver office.

Is trauma counselling covered by insurance?

Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) services are covered under most extended health plans in BC. See my Rates & Coverage page for details, or check your specific plan for counselling or psychotherapy coverage.
