Parenting Counselling in Vancouver - A Closer Look

What Parenting Counselling Can Help With:

Parenting brings up things that surprise even the most prepared among us, such as old family dynamics resurfacing, relationship strain, exhaustion, guilt, and shifts in identity that no one quite warns you about. It can be one of the most meaningful parts of life while also being one of the most disorienting. Engaging in parenting counselling offers you a space to step back, make sense of what you're experiencing, and determine how to move forward in a way that feels intentional rather than reactive.

Parenting doesn't come with a manual, and the challenges it presents often extend beyond just the children themselves. In my practice, I provide support for parents navigating:

- Parenting stress, overwhelm, or burnout

- Old family-of-origin patterns influencing your parenting style

- Relationship strain with a partner regarding parenting roles or decisions

- Identity shifts associated with becoming or being a parent

- Guilt, self-doubt, or fears of 'getting it wrong'

- Parenting through specific challenges—such as a child's diagnosis, separation, blended families, or difficult developmental stages.

You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from this support for parents. Many find value in simply wanting to feel more grounded and less reactive.

Parenting Counselling Vancouver: Frequently Asked Questions

Is this counselling for me, or for my child?

This is counselling designed for you as a parent. If you're seeking support for parents concerning your own stress, identity, relationship dynamics, or patterns related to parenting, this is the right fit for you. While I don't provide direct child therapy, I can assist you in exploring resources for your child if necessary.

Do I need to bring my partner to sessions?

No. Many parents attend parenting counselling on their own, even when the issues involve a partner or co-parent. We can also discuss whether joint sessions might be beneficial at some point, depending on your family dynamics.

What if I feel like I'm failing as a parent?

That feeling is extremely common among parents, and it's usually not a true reflection of how you’re doing. Guilt and self-doubt are prevalent experiences that often lead parents to seek support for parents in counselling, and these feelings are very workable.

How long does parenting counselling take?

The duration varies based on what you’re navigating. Some parents come for a brief period to address a specific challenge, while others may engage in longer-term work, especially when it involves family dynamics and patterns related to their upbringing. We will regularly check in on your pace and progress.

Do you offer online parenting counselling?

Yes. I provide secure online sessions to clients across British Columbia, in addition to in-person sessions at my Vancouver office.

Is parenting counselling covered by insurance?

Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) services are typically covered under most extended health plans in BC. Please refer to my Rates & Coverage page for details, or check your specific plan for counselling or psychotherapy coverage.
