Depression doesn't always manifest as sadness. Just as often, it appears as numbness, low motivation, or merely going through the motions of a life that once felt fulfilling. It can present itself as exhaustion that sleep can't remedy, difficulty concentrating, withdrawing from loved ones, or a quiet sense of disconnection from activities you once enjoyed. Regardless of how it affects you, it's important to remember that it's not a personal failing — and seeking help through depression counselling means you don't have to face it alone.
Depression can develop gradually or arrive suddenly, frequently overlapping with other life events. In my practice, I offer mental health support to those navigating:
- Persistent low mood, numbness, or a sense of flatness
- Loss of interest or motivation in once-cherished activities
- Fatigue, sleep changes, or challenges with concentration
- Depression linked to specific causes such as burnout, grief, health conditions, or significant life changes
- Depression that lacks a clear cause, or one that feels elusive
- Difficulty functioning daily — whether at work, in relationships, or within basic routines
You don’t need to wait until things reach a breaking point before seeking assistance. Support, including online counselling, can be beneficial at any stage of your journey.
What's the difference between feeling low and experiencing clinical depression?
Everyone encounters moments of low mood, but when feelings of numbness or loss of interest linger for weeks and start impacting daily life, it may indicate a deeper issue than just a fleeting emotion. You don't need a formal diagnosis to begin depression counselling. If these feelings are affecting your life, that's reason enough to seek mental health support.
Will I need medication for depression?
Not always. Many clients find that they can manage their depression through counselling alone, while others benefit most from a combination of counselling and medication. I can assist you either way and help you decide if discussing your situation with a physician or psychiatrist is advisable.
What if I don't understand why I feel depressed?
This is quite common, and we can work through it together during your depression counselling sessions. Sometimes there’s a clear trigger for depression; other times, it develops gradually from various factors that may not be immediately apparent.
How long does depression counselling take?
The duration of counselling varies based on your unique circumstances and goals. Some clients experience significant improvements within a few months, while others may engage in longer-term work, especially if their depression is linked to longstanding patterns. We'll regularly check in on your progress and pace throughout your sessions.
Do you offer online counselling for depression?
Absolutely. I provide secure online sessions for clients throughout British Columbia, in addition to in-person counselling at my East Vancouver office.
Is depression counselling covered by insurance?
Most extended health plans in BC generally cover Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) services. For specific details, please check my Rates & Coverage page or consult your individual plan regarding counselling or psychotherapy coverage.
